The storyteller

In the crowded inn the customers shout for a new story. Their bellies are full of food, the wine gives them cheerfulness, it's time of fun and they want to listen to an another tale. At the morning they'll go back to their worries, but now they don't want to think about them. But the storyteller's mouth is dry, his throat soars due all the ballads he played to them. Where's the dancer, that nice girl? Where are the two awesome musicians? Why don't they step forward to give him a bit of relief? The voices rise, some become angry with the inebriation brought by the wine. Nobody comes to release the storyteller. Just the landlord comes closer, with a half a pint of ale and the hint to carry on. The wage must be deserved, he says with a honeyed smile. The storyteller wash his gall down with
a sip of ale, then his voice rises in the opening of another ballad, for the patrons' happiness. There's no rest tonight for the storyteller: tomorrow he will be allowed to rest, when the other ones will mind their own businesses and hardly will deign him of a greeting. Till the next time they will want fun.

Prima riuscivo a  tenerlo sotto controllo.

Swinging between depression and exaltation, moving from anger to sorrow, I've stopped to think, I've stopped to listen. Into my arrhythmic heart beat I've tried to remember. Not everything was dark once. There were dreams. There were desires. And I had hopes. When did I change? What did it change me? Is it possible that this is all that of a love remain? Or truly did this city infected me, with something rose from its burial grounds hidden underneath her? Like a sponge I absorbed feelings which weren't completely mine, which in me did amplify. Maybe the disillusion made the remaining part. The gloom has always been inside me, but I wasn't in this way,  before.  I could keep it under control, before.
And now here I am, trying to imagine what has changed, and I have no clue. Maybe, it began the day I started to live for the day I would have quit. Since then the gloom has grown up and now it spreads all around me, touches the people who come closer, decides the words I utter, hazes all that I watch. With a past as rich as mine, the void of the present can lead just to a lack of future. But all that I asked for was a lullaby at night.

One of the most interesting words in English language

A relationship is over when...

A relationship is really over when...

...you don't find her hair on your clothes anymore,

...you stop receiving her magazines at your address,

...and you have given back her last pair of socks forgotten in the wardrobe.

If the core holds

Always walking on that blurred boundary where the will yields to desperation, you bend over to watch inside the abyss, to observe the others through yourself. Sometimes you're the whisper which turns somebody's head, the absence weighing a dismayed heart down; sometimes you're the enraged bull which ravages a weakened soul. And it's still you, even if you keep trying to lose yourself, because your core is too strong and keeps attracting back all the pieces that you drop along the road. You wonder if it's worth, or if maybe the disfigured face reflected in the shattered mirror deserves finally to be forgotten. The road that was told you had to be behind the mirror wasn't there. The blood drips, drop by drop, from your wounded hands, drawing a path leading home. It's your most inner self calling, urging you to stand up and fight, but how can you ignite the night if you miss the true spark? You're embers which smoulder under the ash, still dangerous; you're a void you wish to fill, a void which swallowed the sea; you're a dull pain which doesn't want to heal, a pain at the same time diverting and anchoring your soul. You stare back and you see just confusion. You push on and there's no path to follow. Split between anger and anguish, love and delusion, you know very well what your road is and like Jonah you refuse to follow it. But here there isn't a whale to hide in.

Pensieri estemporanei: the London Fan

Raving Metropolis 4

Iliana walked along the Metropolis streets. The holidays lights and the shop signs assaulted her eyes, the crowd thousand voices and the ambulance sirens assailed her hearing. Her mind swayed, tired. And yet I slept... She didn't know anymore if she was inside a dream or she was awake. The flood of people all around her laughed, screamed, cheered, joked... but their faces were just white and blank mask to her eyes. Empty, empty... you all are just empty! She wanted to shout it, but she knew better than let the others think she was crazy. Her children would have been taken away from her, she wouldn't see them again.
She stood to watch inside a shop window. She didn't see anything. Tiredness seemed to gnaw at her bones, but it wasn't physical, it wasn't her body to be tired. It was an always present tiredness, like something was sucking constantly her strength in the same way a leech sucks blood. On the window glass the lights were blurred reflections, the mirrored faces passed by were hazy and fast. She wanted to go home and have a shower to wash away from her body the smell of no clean humanity, the smell of her supervisor who got any chance to rub himself against her. Eating something... what? I need to buy some food... Put the kids to bed, sleeping. The night would pass quick as a breath, no scents to keep into her lungs, just vaguely nauseating smells. Then awake again, before dawn, in the cold, to go to work in a coughing and sniffling city, which walked dragging the feet.
What was there in that shop window? Why did I stop to watch? A face was reflected on the glass, big, open-wide eyes, full of a lucid madness, the vulgar mouth open in an indecent chuckle showing pointed teeth. Scared, Iliana turned suddenly. Nobody was behind her, just the crowd passing by indifferent. She turned back towards the shop window and that wicked glare was there. Shivering, Iliana left towards the station, almost running, among shoves, indifference, loneliness, alienation.

The carriage was cold, even if full up of men and women of so many different races who consumed all the oxygen in it. Shrunken on the bottom seat Iliana couldn't stop shivering, shaken by what she didn't know. The other commuters were anonymous and featureless, isolated and unfathomable, surrounded by invisible walls and prisoners of themselves. The noise of the train, the scream of the air compressed between the coaches travelling at high speed and the tunnel's vault, were a new physical attack to her just deprived energy. And blended with the other noises, so vague and fragmented which could be a work of her imagination, a laugh. A wild cachination, demented, obscene. “Who are you? What do you want from me?” Iliana repeated whispering. Nobody could hear her, in the noise. Someone stared at her lips incessantly moving. You're crazy, the eyes of those people said. I don't want to share anything with you, the eyes of those strangers said. The laugh carried on resounding at the bottom of her ears.
Then a short walk from the station to home, passing in front of a graffiti covered high wall: Sleep. Eat. Work. Repeat. Dirty road, cold and humid wind, spoiled trees, drunkards and malevolent glares like just men are able to be malevolent when facing a woman. A little bit of tired bliss when back home... a home without warm... in the kids' greetings and hugs. The food she needed to buy forgotten, but the tiredness too much to get out again and back to the supermarket. A dinner made with what remained in the larder, children tired and listless. Then into the bed, under damp covers, in the dark but not in the silence. Screams at the next door, police's sirens somewhere not far, scratching of small paws inside the empty walls, a nasty argument on the road. Broken glasses. The sleep which struggles to come, tackled by an ache in every muscle. And still that laugh, almost held back, like to avoid to disturb her. Reason to find it even more scaring than on the train.
“Who are you? What do you want from me?” Questions whined under her breath while drifting into sleep.
I'm the engine of this city...
“Let me sleep... go away...”
A merry chuckle. I'll never leave you alone. You cannot split me from you.
Iliana sunk into a sleep full of nightmares. People without face shoved her on the road, malevolent faces laughed at her from the shop windows. Sleep. Eat. Work. Repeat. Demented cackle. Sleep. Eat. Work. Repeat. And the alarm, pitiless. A feeling of nausea, cold water on the face, a retch and a shiver of cold. A message for the kids. Then out into the humid dark with an empty stomach, stalking towards the station.
Iliana stopped suddenly when a figure materialized from behind a tree. Walk, a voice in her mind ordered. Or you'll be late at work, added mockingly. Iliana resumed her walk, stiff. The figure moved along with her.
-Who are you?
A sidelong glance, more perceived than seen, a look of amused stupor. Do you really want to know it? People never want to see me. When I take everything from them, they turn their head to the opposite direction. Even while I devour their soul, they speak up and stare in front of them, so to pretend it's not happening. Are you sure you want to know who I am?
-Who are you?- A quiver in her voice, a knot in her throat, while she walked stiff staring in front of her.
I'm the engine of this Metropolis. I'm your master.
A breath of satisfaction.
And now that you know who I am, I'll tell you who you are.
A chill run down Iliana's back.
You're nothing. You're my slave. You're fuel for the engine. I'll feed on your soul, then I'll discard you. And after yours, I'll devour your children's.
Tears... warm... Strange, Iliana thought, something warm... flowed down her chicks. They arrived insipid to her lips. When I was child they were more salted...
-I just wanted to be happy...- Iliana moaned, still walking towards the station, the voice broken with sobs. -I wanted... just... to be happy...
Happy? What an absurdity! You're not here to be happy. The voice fell silent and the figure disappeared.

In the depths of the Metropolis the Demon laughed, a laugh which ran along all the tunnels, taken far by the trains stuffed of bodies. From the hight of his towers alive of cranes, the Demon's eyes watched Iliana to complete her way to the station. Sleep. Eat. Work. Repeat. Not even a quick glance to the graffiti. And the Demon laughed. Laughed at Iliana's tears, laughed at the tiredness gnawing at her. Laughed at her desperation. Laughed at her defeat.

Raving Metropolis 3

The Demon called the Pale Lords' Man. “It's time to me to grow”, the Demon said. “Make the ground ready for my growth.” And the Pale Lords' Man left to do it abiding with the Demons request. The Mighty of other nations were coaxed with promises of future power if they brought their wealth to the Metropolis; men of genius who were born in other lands were lured with great rewards to put their genius at the Metropolis service. Riches and inventiveness were drained from the near nations. New labour masses were deported to the Metropolis: attracted by the promise of a better life, they ended up in a place they couldn't leave. And the Demon began to build a shell to grow in.
Metallic arms erupted from the ground, trying to grab the sky. New excrescences outgrew from the dying land, hyperplasias shining in the sun, frigid shapes swallowing every day new servants, sent to satiate the Demon. Worn out faces, blank eyes, confused minds and hardened hearts: there was nothing else in the Metropolis streets. Fake laughs, voice made thick by the alcohol, animal copulas were all the Demon's servants could experiencing during their life no-life. The spirit eroded and consumed, day by day till the most inner itself, people let themselves to die, disappeared, troubled they went back to their homelands, leaving room for new modern slaves.
In the underground, the Demon laughed, a demented and evil cachinnation, starting to expand its body towards the sky, filling progressively all the new shells which grew more and more in high. The men perceived its presence, but they didn't understand what it was. More and more people withdrew in themselves, distanced themselves from other people, spending all their free time inside accommodations more similar to dens than to man homes. The Demon's influence, step by step, deprived the men of their ability to communicate, to manifest their sentiments. Penned in ghettos nobody talked anymore to who had different origins, to who was of a different look, to who spoke a different tongue even if saying the same things. Any interest was slowly consumed and was lost, leaving room just for the most animal-like instincts and the mechanical routine the Pale Lords imposed: eat, work, sleep, repeat. Less and lesser cared about the place they lived in and of who lived with them. The filth accumulated on the roads: who was paid to pick it up was sacrificed to the Demon and replaced with predators more apt to snatch money from people, because the Demon growth requested great expenses. Disagreements and grudges simmered under the surface: the Pale lords enacted laws to forbid the expression of people own feelings. Life in the Metropolis became harder: the wages were decreased so that employers could hire more labourers. Profits were not enough: the youth were persuaded to work for no money but just to gain experience, an experience useless the very next day. The worst perversions established among people: drugs, alcohol, violences and sex with children and the authorities turned in an other direction, because all of it made the Demon stronger.
The Demon laughed and now its laugh didn't resounded just in the tunnels piercing the Metropolis underground. Now it was audible even in the air, taken far from the wind. The pale Lords' Man, brought to distraction by the Demon, ruled that the Metropolis had to grow even more, to climb to the sky and cover all the lands. Made greed by the Demon, he promised to the Mighty of other nations the land and his own people's children. The Mighty came, bought the most beautiful places of the Metropolis, then they turned their desire to everything their eyes fell upon. The Pale Lords' Man ruled that the Metropolis had to be rid of any individual not useful to the aim, that the servants had to live out of the city's boundaries where they worked, so as to leave it just for the rich and powerful people of the Earth. “Chased away all the useless ones”, the Demon said. “Deport them to the neglected lands under the grey northern skies. Build homes for my servants out of my sight, and dig a tunnel to link their houses with the building sites to let them coming everyday to serve me, crawling like the worms they are. And when the time will be ripe I will grow along that tunnel, to creep up on them in their own homes and to devour their children's heart and soul while they sleep in their beds.”

At the night's doors

All'alba ti diro' il mio nome.

At the night's doors listen to my song. There are no names here, just our story. Tomorrow will come to take us away, I'll tell you my name while walking along the road. Nobody should ask for the
storyteller's name: the words of the story is what matter to remember, not who utters them. In the night the words create ghosts to dance with, concerns melt away and fears dissolve, living space to the warm of  a nameless embrace. Let my words lead you into the dream which we must leave at dawn. At dawn I'll tell you my name.
